Pastoral Letters of the Old Catholic Bishop Augustin Podolák in the Years of Limited Freedom

The thesis deals with the topic of the pastoral letters of the Old Catholic bishop Augustin Podolák from the years 1971 till 1989, in other words during the time, when the bishop was deprived by the state of his state approval for spiritual functions. To illustrate the case the thesis include also three letters from the time after the revolution, that can shed some lite on the depth of the personality of Bishop Augustin. Beside the pastoral letters the thesis deals also with the history of the Old Catholic Church, because this history often influenced the content of the bishop's letters. Last but not least the thesis offers also a biography of the second Old Catholic bishop from his birth till his death.

The thesis' main objective is to describe the development of the Czech Old Catholic Church in the first eight years after the Velvet revolution. It presents the historical context which led to significant changes in the church life after the fall of the Communist regime. The history from the Synod of Renewal till the election of Bishop Dušan Hejbal in 1991 is described from both national and international perspective. After that the thesis describes the relation between the Church and the bishops of the Union of Utrecht. The thesis uses mainly unpublished archival sources and present an analysis of this recent period of the Old Catholic history and its relation with state organs, the International Bishops' Conference, as well as the portraits of the main actors.

The reasons for the late accession of the Austrian and the Czechoslovak Old Catholic Church to the Utrecht Union

The main task of this work is to present the relationship between the Old Catholic Church of Austria and the Union of Utrecht in the period 1889 - 1925. Other topics are the circumstances of the foundation of the Union of Utrecht and the Old Catholic churches cooperation within the union and contacts with other confessions as well. The first part presents the circumstances of the foundation of the Union of Utrecht and is based primarily on the fundamental theses defining the Union. This part is also focused on the phenomenon of congresses, synods and episcopal conferences, which are the main symbol of the Old Catholic churches. The part of it is also the question of joining the Old Catholic Church of Austria with the Union of Utrecht, which was one of the main themes of this work to be solved by the analysis of archival documents. The next section deals with issues of episcopal office, mainly of appointing the office of the Old Catholic Bishopric of Austria. One of the aims of this part is also to determine whether the filling of the office of bishopric was the condition of the affiliation of the church with the Union of Utrecht. The last part is aimed at the issues of the Old Catholic churches' cooperation, mainly dealing with specific cases of cooperation between Old Catholic Church of Austria...
